Linda Lee

Uktena Kinfolk and Dual Tradition Dreamspeaker / Virtual Adept mage. Integrated Spiritualist and Codemonkey.

Currently in play in the Awakening Chronicle.

Ex-Fomor (formerly possessed by a Misery Bane).  Renunciate (former) Black spiral Dancer Kinfolk

(click here for her sheet from when she was still a Fomor up until Story 3 chapter 2 of this Chronicle)

Linda was the character that Hal brought in to New Bremen on the first day of that long-dead moderated chat game back in April of 2000. As of this game's start in 2011, It had been over ten years now, and Hal felt like revisiting the idea. Note that there are some story modifications here to accommodate using her again – in the original chat game, she did not escape the Garou, and in fact deliberately allowed them to kill her. This version obviously assumes that she escaped instead.

Character Sheet

Concept: Integrated Animist Hacker

Tradition: Dual Dreamspeaker/Virtual Adept

Nature: Survivor

Demeanor: Hacker

Essence: Primordial

Hacker Aliases: Eel, ==1

Age: 25 (Birthdate 3/3/1986. Greco-Roman: Pisces. Garou: Shantar the Loom-Maker, Incarna of Neptune.)

Myers-Briggs personality type: INFP - the mediator/dreamer

Description

Linda is a ghostly-pale, thin young woman with a toned, lean, shapely and tightly defined body, five feet eight inches in height. A rigorous nutrition and exercise regimen has been paying off: where once she was painfully emaciated and pointy, her muscles and curves have filled in considerably, allowing her large breasts to look less out of place. Her platinum blonde (virtually white) hair is straight and fine, hanging down a little past her shoulders. A beautiful face with chiseled cheekbones is dominated by striking, cunning white-blue eyes. Linda is albinoid, having greatly reduced pigmentation, in her skin, hair and eyes - she is not the popular conception of the chalk-white, pink-eyed albino, though she does wear bleeding edge high tech AR glasses to correct for her naturally poor vision. Distinctive tattoos mark her face: a line, trailed underneath with a series of dots, running from one cheek to the other across the bridge of her nose, terminating on the left with a small Uktena tribal glyph, while two small circles are also vertically arranged down her chin.

Her voice is low, ethereal and breathy, with a sing-song delivery and a thick Georgia accent tinged with hints of Appalachia and something else harder to quantify (influenced by the Pictish).

Track marks on her forearms and assorted scars  hint at a past lifetime of abuse and self-harm. She is introverted and jumpy, finding it difficult to make friends or to get to know strangers.

Nowadays she tends to wear brief tank tops when indoors, with jeans or sweatpants and converse all-stars complete her typical ‘at-home’ ensemble. She also wears a gold necklace with a pendant in the shape of the sanskrit character "OHM" - this is a gift from Amrita, and she cherishes it. On one ankle she has a tattoo in the shape of the Black Spiral Dancer tribal glyph, which has a black claw mark scar cutting across it.

Outside, her wardrobe is more diverse, ranging from unobtrusive hoodies to rockabilly to punk to goth, but frequently featuring big boots and a black cowboy hat decorated with turkey and owl feathers and assorted charms and sigils. In colder or inclement weather, she wears a heavy coat, sometimes draped across her shoulders like a cape.

When she is going into a potentially dangerous situation, she wears a suit of highly sophisticated body armor, given to her by Overwatch but since upgraded. Over the top of this she often wears her familiar trench coat, depending on the circumstances. A pistol is kept holstered at the small of her back, and she sometimes carries a pump-action shotgun. Fighting gloves cover her hands and steel toed boots her feet.

Totem:

Owl [3 innate abilities] core book, p. 296. Silent watcher, Owl strikes without warning in the darkness. Like the silent Striders who claim the totem's protection, Owl holds hidden wisdom. The totem is also associated with secrets of death and the shadowy Dark Umbra. Some believe that owls are vengeful spirits of the dead. Owl finds merit in the quiet possession of secret knowledge, the awareness of the meaningful meaninglessness of time, and even more so in the possession of quiet passion so powerful it can heal. In such beings, as in Owl's eyes, reflect the most primal hopes and dreams of Gaia. (the last bit there was from the Axis Mundi description of Owl)
Traits: Owl's children are often gifted with premonitions of danger and the location of mystic places long forgotten. Upon entering the Umbra, each of Owl's children gains wings, allowing them to fly from place to place. Owl's Children subtract two from all difficulties involving stealth, silence or quiet. The character gains three dice when using any Effect involving air, travel, movement or darkness. Silent Striders may appear mysteriously to aid the character when she is in danger. Ratkin and children of Rat do not get along well at all with Owl's children, considering Owl's predatory nature. Owl can nearly always rapidly find Linda.

Ban: Owl asks that the character leave small tied or helpless rodents in the woods for him and his kind.

Rage: 4, Gnosis: 6, Willpower: 7, Essence 17

Charms: Airt Sense, Re-form

(accounting: 3 totem for base cost, 4 totem for +12 points on top of the basic 5 for Rage, Gnosis and Willpower +1 to always find her. )

Class 1 armor (spider-silk, 3 soak, no penalty, under "permanent" Heisenberg Compensation Armor, Mark I spell effect causing +2 difficulty on projectile attacks versus the wearer, reduces damage type by 1 level. Dedicated. Per Daniel, her armor looks like this)

Colt .45 (dam 5, Rng 30, Rate 3, Clip 7+1, Conc J), Remington 870 shotgun (dam 8 rng 20 rate 3, clip 8+1, Conc T), H&K Mp5 10mm (dam 5, rng 40, rate 21*, mag 15+1), flick knife (s/L, Conc P), military style combat knife (Diff 3, S/A, diff 4 to damage, conc P. 2 sets of dedicated clothing, a few odds and ends of regular clothing, slick cracking computer, smartphone with extensively modified OS and home-written apps as well as modified hardware (such as deadman trigger to message Steve coordinates if she does not check in regularly, usb connection and a variety of other upgrades, both legit and otherwise ), Talens noted above.

She drives a recently restored and repainted green 1975 Dodge Ram Tradesman van. Its interior is in process of being converted into a mobile comm center and hacker cave.

As she fled Overwatch, she looted the place for as much computer equipment as she could in the limited time that she had to do so, and also raided HSL’s data center, acquiring a large number of hard drives that she has used to expand her server farm. Thus she has a variety of high end computer components, compact laptops and things of that nature stowed in her van. She also has a broken Overwatch UPC that was hers when she was still with the chantry, but the Wonder was damaged in the Chantry's final battle and while she is highly competent at computer repair, she does not have access to the necessary degree of Sphere magic so she can't restore its magical functions (which were mostly based around Correspondence connection for communication with the now-destroyed Chantry servers and all other UPC carriers anyways).

Focus

Paradigm: The Gaian Apocalypse.

Creation (Gaia) is Innately Divine and Alive, but that creation and its cycles (as exemplified by the Triat) are also sick and breaking down, bound on a One-Way Trip to Oblivion - she's convinced the Apocalypse is coming, and fast. Linda has always felt what her Garou relatives call Gnosis: a connection to those underlying truths, including a sense of the Mother's pain, that sense that the Wyrm is both real and gnawing away at Reality. She feels that this connection is what made it possible for her personally to Awaken, to feel the planet’s call, to take a place standing between the mundane world and the spiritual world, that allows her to feel and interact with a deeper layer of reality. Because Everything is Data (the dreams of Gaia) it has an underlying spiritual meta-language, or source code if you will, through which Gaia and the reality that she has dreamed up interface with the beings dwelling therein. Linda tends to see her magic as learning and hacking that code.

Even the Wyrm and entropy are necessary, so it's up to her to adapt even as she's breaking along with everything else, and to even use that process of breakage to master every trick she can to fight the dying of the light as long and as hard as she can... and to hope that her efforts and those of other souls that care can help ensure that there's enough left after the inevitable Apocalypse for the Wyrm to be broken out of its prison, so Gaia can eventually recover and rebuild.

Practices: Shamanism with Reality Hacking and a dose of post-postmodern Witchcraft, Gutter Magic and even some Martial Arts mixed in. She calls herself a hacker and a medicine worker out of respect to her tribe's preferred terminology, though her own practice is more shamanism than 'true' medicine work.

Preferred Instruments:

Instruments: DS (italicized instruments have been surpassed)

  1. Languages & runes are a huge part of her arsenal, specifically Pictish and internet jargon. she makes extensive use of these, either verbally or written or digitally (including pretanic squares), often in the form of blessings and curses. She deeply associates Pictish with decay, destruction and with truths buried within reality. While she knows that the language itself is not inherently magical, when she speaks or writes in it, she is able to draw herself more in tune with the time before time, when the spirits all heard Gaia's call.
  2. Meditation (often with a vocal, yogic or musical element)
  3. Energy (gnosis - often from Blood & life fluids)
  4. Symbols (like the feather that she employs)
  5. Dances, gestures & movement practices
  6. Offerings & Sacrifices (like chiminage, often including ordeals or exertion)
  7. Elements (particularly using animistic archetypes gleaned from Garou mysticism)

Instruments: VA (italicized instruments have been surpassed)

  1. Computers & IT gear
  2. Gadgets/inventions (her own coding, apps etc)
  3. Martial Arts - she sees her body as a UI through which her spirit interfaces with the Dream, and martial arts as a system of inputs, a code that she can enter through that UI to influence that Dream.
  4. Weapons - mostly knives and firearms, but she's also enchanted arrows and the like. For example, she keeps the Prime-enchanted bullet that was supposed to have her name on it, and the late Steve's ka-bar
  5. Laboratory (well, hacker cave)
  6. Fashion (especially body paint, ritual gear and the like, including nudity)
  7. Music

Interestingly, due to her history as a recovering addict to hard drugs, she does not employ psychoactive substances as part of her shamanic magical practice.

She also has not yet begun to explore the mystic potential of sex and sensuality in her magic, largely because of her own hang-ups on the subject, though the time for her to begin those explorations surely isn't far distant.

Personal / Favorite Instruments: (-1 Difficulty)

Spirit: The Pictish Language

Correspondence: Computers & IT Gear

Avatar

Linda’s avatar is powerful (level 4) and unutterably ancient, a Primordial Avatar. She perceives it as “the Voice in the Water”: she generally only sees it out of the corner of her eyes, or mostly obscured. It takes the form of some kind of scaled, aquatic serpent monster that speaks to her from the water, whose coils break the surface intermittently, and whose head thus far has only emerged outside of her direct field of vision. If she is herself in the water in her visions, it will frequently brush against her or wrap her briefly in its coils. The creature’s voice is deep and ominous, and it frequently tells her to “let go” of one hindrance or another, and whispers to her on other subjects as well as she moves through her life. Breaking personal and spiritual barriers is one of the core things that her Avatar influences her to use her magic for, and that includes the Avatar Storm. It has been sending her premonitions regarding some desire it has for her to take action towards bringing down the Storm, but she has been stumped thus far on how it expects her to do anything about such a vast cosmic force, and so she has not broached the topic with anyone.

Rotes:

Step Sideways (Spirit 3, core book - her Instrument for this is highly unusual for a Dreamspeaker. Rather than using lengthy rituals, she just unfocuses her eyes, preferably staring into a reflective surface, and steps through the Gauntlet. It took her some practice to get this down again, but this is how Garou Step Sideways, and how she did when she was a Fomor, so it makes perfect sense to her that it should work this way for her.)

Spirit Slaying (Spirit 2, Prime 2) – Dreamspeakers revised, p. 69 (similar to Holy Stroke but allowed to strike across the Gauntlet too)

Lesser Binding of Spirits (Spirit 2, Prime 2) – ‘’, p. 66

Moving the World Walls (Spirit 2) – ‘’, p.66 (raise or lower Gauntlet 1/sux)

Walking the Open Path (Spirit 2, Prime 1), - ‘’, p. 66 (lower Gauntlet 2/sux, at Node only. 2 sux always creates a Shallowing)

Pathfinding (Entropy 1, Spirit 1), - The Infinite Tapestry, p. 182. 1 soak die/sux vs. Avatar Storm

The Spirit’s Caress (Spirit 2, core book)

Call Spirit / Spirit Summoning (Spirit 2 & 3, core book)

Holy Stroke (Prime 2, core book)

Awaken the Inanimate (Spirit 3, Core Book)

Chaos Butterfly (Blood Treachery, p. 91)

Caesar’s Due (Entropy 2, Prime 2, Correspondence 3, from OoH Rev p. 67) - pays your bills with magic.

Active Spells as of Story 9-4:

Complex sensory array: Correspondence 2, Entropy 1, Prime 1, Spirit 1, - scrying out the surrounding region and patching that in to her interface via her AR glasses and mobile device because that's one of the Instruments. Along the way, she tracks Prime/Spirit signatures to pick out and hopefully identify supernatural elements, and to determine threat probabilities via Entropy. (3 successes for range/area of effect, 4 for duration, so 6 months, 3 for the different dimensions of scan. Total 10 successes)

Probabilistic targeting and battlespace awareness: (her standard suite of Correspondence 1/Forces 1) that lowers the difficulty of her Dodge, Firearms, Brawl and Melee by -3 (5 successes for duration, so ST's option, more than 6 months, 3 for bonus degree, 3 for expanded action categories.)

Doom hex: Entropy 3 to lower difficulties of her damage rolls by 3 for the rest of the Story (3 successes for difficulties, 2 successes to add firearms and melee to the covered attack types, 3 for duration, so Story - 8 successes)

Anti-scrying ward: 9 successes of protection for story duration.

Mental empowerment:  (24 successes ritual: 4 successes to 6 month duration, 1 to divided attention, +2 Perception (5), +1 Intelligence (5), +1 Wits (5), 4 to duration (6 months), 15 to lower difficulties for Alertness, Awareness, Athletics, Empathy, Subterfuge, Performance, Cosmology, Enigmas, Esoterica, Investigation, Occult, Technology, Wyrm Lore (24). )

Other: Currently has thanks to other Mages' work, a +3 Initiative, and her Dex and Stamina are both boosted to 5.

Path

Things break; Pick up the pieces. Just because something is corrupt does not mean it cannot be put to beneficial use. Carry both light and darkness within you; to all things there is a season, and a time to every purpose. She’s very much headed onto a course in her path that is about reconciling her roles as a destroyer, an anti-corporate/anti-Nephandic operative, and a mother and nurturer, as well as Kinfolk and support, into an organizer. She’s historically been a wallflower and a follower, scrupulously submissive to the Garou et cetera, but is also coming to terms with the idea that her anti-Pentex activities  and the loss of Amrita (and probably soon, Ro) will require her to increasingly be an advocate and spokesperson in her own right (she’s still coming to terms with having had to be the voice and face person for the recent presentation on Pentex that is about to be distributed to Tradition leaders, for instance).

Hooks: Things break; Pick up the pieces. Just because something is corrupt does not mean it cannot be put to beneficial use. Carry both light and darkness within you; to all things there is a season, and a time to every purpose.

*Notes on the concept of Akhilanda: It's a sanskrit word that literally means "never-not-broken". This is an idea that's really key to Linda, and it's one that Amrita pointed out to her in Mexico around the time that she picked up that particular Resonance trait, though the idea had been part of Linda's arc for quite some time. Here's an article on the concept. This is the power of finding not only strength but wholeness in brokenness. Rather than letting your fear and pain control you, riding it warrior-style and letting its power carry you through the turbulence. Though she flies on Owl's wings, Linda's element is definitely still water; she’s been broken over and over again in so many ways and had to reinvent herself, and reinventing herself constantly while swimming through those deep waters is where she finds purpose.

Backstory

Linda tells her own story on two different blog posts, with two different audiences in mind:

Life as a [Data Expunged] Kinfolk - presented as a transcript of her narrating her experiences to another Kinfolk (Prof. Lloyd Warner, a Child of Gaia Kinfolk based out of Austin, TX who also happens to be a member of both the Arcanum and the Gaia Network), in a style reminiscent of the SCP Foundation. She deliberately excises some information based on who she's telling the story to here.

Linda Lee, Revisited - This one is sort of a stream-of-consciousness as she tells her own story, but is much more candid and explicit than the other post - she's not hiding anything here. I have no idea who she's narrating it to. Maybe she's talking to herself...

Current Status

On March 17, 2011, beneath Cinder Cone in Lassen Volcanic National Park (Story 3 chapter 2), Linda was subjected to the secret Mockery Curing Way rite of the Uktena and her humanity was restored, and she Awakened as a Mage.

Blue Books From Overwatch

Linda's First Bargain - a brief look at Linda's first serious attempt to bargain with her Bane for mutual advantage. This event took place just before the Overwatch Cabal's joint assault on US Bank Tower with an unsanctioned team of Technocracy operatives.

The Recording - this brief post shows when and part of why she made that backstory recording (see above) to begin with, providing it with context. It takes place immediately after debriefing at Overwatch upon the Cabal's return from Los Angeles at the end of Damn... Zombies. She actually delivered the recording between Overwatch's fall and the current Chronicle.

There Would Be No Running Away From The Dawn - This takes place fairly shortly after "The Recording".

Cleansing - This is the scene that the preceding story segment led up to, but is the actual chatlog of that sequence from Overwatch. Steve reveals that he knows that Linda is a Fomor, and performs the Rite of Cleansing on her as per a prior bargain.

The Alleged Van - another little tidbit that takes place not long after the return from Los Angeles. Strago getting involved in Linda's auto repairs and a somewhat awkward conversation. Set during the period between Steve's performing the Rite of Cleansing on her and his return to Overwatch.

The Doctor Is In - A longer story segment that happens during the same day as the van one above. Linda has a physical examination with Christi that leads to an even more awkward discussion than the one she had with Strago.

Always Pressing, Always Pressing - Sat in the night after the preceding two, this is the tale of how Linda managed to make a deal with Owl.

Image Links

Over the course of this chronicle and the OVerwatch chronicle, and previous experience playing her, Hal has drawn Linda quite a few times. Here are a few more:

Know What Would Be Awesome? - cartoon image of Devin suggesting to Linda that she should Matrix-fy herself.

Linda Boxing Sketch 1 - Linda taping up for practice in the Overwatch gym.

Troubled People - A sketch of Linda, Steve and Umbra (Odysseus) made after Overwatch but before this chronicle. This was a concept sketch for a webcomic/multimedia narrative project that Hal still might do at some point. It reflects the characters as they existed in Overwatch rather than their later, Awakening-specific appearances.

Overwatch Group - A drawing of Linda, Steve and Ody that was created just as this Chronicle's play group was starting to form. This is more true to their Awakening-era looks.

Linda In Her Jumpsuit and Overcoat - This is a different version of the portrait from this page, wearing her Overwatch body armor, her olive jumpsuit and overcoat, and with the secondary arms still in place.

Linda Without the Coat - Here's Linda in her fomoric form in the tank top and jeans but without the coat.

Linda Mutation 2 - Here's a concept sketch that I never completed of Linda's final fomoric form, as it assumed on the same day that she was finally cured.

Linda Mutation 2 Skulls - More concept art of the final form. Its ears are more like are shown here rather than in the other one. This was done to study the structure and mechanics of the jaw and skull, then to drape them with flesh.

You used a Black Spiral Dancer glyph... I thought she was kinfolk? - that one should be in there. Also, You can even add her Urge-Wyrm 'supervisor' if you so felt necessary. I'ma guess and ponder... either its Eater or BoW, or the generiy Wyrm one.

She's BSD Kinfolk, and the Kin glyph is to the left of the BSD glyph. Her Triatic Wyrm is Eater-of-Souls. When she was initiated as a Cognitus in the Praetanic Order, they divined that her personal Praetanic Key is Eater-of-Souls in the House of Hoga, so her Urge Wyrm is Lethargg the Urge of Apathy.
Her Bane inhabitant is arguably more associated with either Angu the Urge of Cruelty or Gree the Urge of Despair, both of which are associated with Beast-of-War rather than Eater-of-Souls... but Linda herself is definitely Eater-of-Souls.

Heh.. this just jumped into my head, and I spent a good hour or so getting all the latin verbs and nouns right - but I think it turned out well - its a corrupted, twisted version of the trinitarian formula.

In nomine Pater Vermiis, et Instigores, et Animūs Vitiōsī. (In the name of Father Wyrm, the Urges, and the Twisted Soul)

Linda has 26 XP to spend and here is where I'm looking at having her buy once some real in character downtime hits:
Brawl 3 (6 xp)
Gnosis 4 (8 xp)
Rituals 3 (6 xp)
Athletics 2 (4 xp)
Total spend: 24, leaving 2 XP unspent
If Steve can persuade Judith or somebody else to teach him the Rite of the Spirit Brew (which is one of his objectives), Linda will try to surreptitiously learn it along with him.
